Love and Anger by Kate Bush

It lay buried here. It lay deep inside me.
It’s so deep I don’t think that I can speak about it.
It could take me all of my life,
But it would only take a moment to

Tell you what I’m feeling,
But I don’t know if I’m ready yet.
You come walking into this room
Like you’re walking into my arms.
What would I do without you?

Take away the love and the anger,
And a little piece of hope holding us together.
Looking for a moment that’ll never happen,
Living in the gap between past and future.
Take away the stone and the timber,
And a little piece of rope won’t hold it together.

If you can’t tell your sister,
If you can’t tell a priest,
‘Cause it’s so deep you don’t think that you can speak about it
To anyone,
Can you tell it to your heart?
Can you find it in your heart

To let go of these feelings
Like a bell to a Southerly wind?
We could be like two strings beating,
Speaking in sympathy…
What would we do without you?
Two strings speak in sympathy.

Take away the love and the anger,
And a little piece of hope holding us together.
Looking for a moment that’ll never happen,
Living in the gap between past and future.
Take away the stone and the timber,
And a little piece of rope won’t hold it together.

We’re building a house of the future together.
(What would we do without you?)

Well, if it’s so deep you don’t think that you can speak about it,
Just remember to reach out and touch the past and the future.
Well, if it’s so deep you don’t think you can speak about it,
Don’t ever think that you can’t change the past and the future.
You might not, not think so now,
But just you wait and see–someone will come to help you.

T. Rex – Trelawny Lawn

The flowing mane of pain swells on Trelawny Lawn
Stark handsome eyes decide the unicorn
Is a beast of borrowed wisdom
Like a thrush in the yielding harvest field
The prophet deems snow.

The silent stork of sadness scans Trelawny Lawn
The lion, the unicorn it’s horn in the lap of Beth
Laments the dawn
Beguiled, the scribish jacket-man his cap a skull-of-rat
Is but a pawn.

0 sky, your eyes embrace is to vicious for my wheat
The foaming Earthguard whinneys to his leaden feet
The bullfinch rumbles
The lavish lion aslanically scythes the hay
The unicorn bids you stay.

Black Antlers by Coil

I finally scored a copy of Coil’s Black Antlers and I was not disappointed. They truly are one of my favorite bands and I am so impressed with their decades of creativity (since 1983) that have inspired me. Words can even describe how important their music is to me.

the new M.I.A. record is actually pretty good

One of my oldest and dearest friends (and long time pen pal from LA) Damion Romero makes beautiful minimal noise music. He used one of my watercolor paintings for the entire gatefold image in his new double LP “Twins.” The original record looks amazing and it is my eleventh record cover collaboration with a musician and my first gatefold image ever.

I met Kate Simko last year at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival. After playing an amazing live set she was supposed to leave on a flight back to Chicago. But she had some really really bad flight luck and could not leave town. So she returned back to the festival in complete desperation, and we were the first people she ran into. Poor Kate was in the worst mood and I immediately adopted her as my own and made sure she had a good time for the remainder of the festival. Now we have become close friends and I am so excited for her and her budding career. She is one of the few women I personally know who is making her own electronic music. Yeah Kate!

Girls Together Outragously
03.31.08 | No Comments

My stepdad just gave me this cd randomly. I guess because he knows I like strange obscure music by women. The GTO’s are an all girl groupies group produced by Frank Zappa in the late 1960s. One of the group’s members Pamela Des Barres, wrote the memoir I’m with the Band. Their cd Permanent Damage is a weird mixture of strange theatrical songs and random interviews. It is very rough music but it does precede some later girl bands like Liliput, The Raincoats, Rasputina, CocoRosie, and they even remind me of my friend Dame Darcy’s music.

It is as if you gave the mischievous turn of the century girls from Picnic at Hanging Rock a recording studio in 1968.

One of my favorite films ever:

This is one of the most creative things I have ever heard and the music is pretty good. The remix album is coming out soon and I am super excited to hear it.
The Vegetable Orchestra performs music solely on instruments made of vegetables. Using carrot flutes, pumpkin basses, leek violins, leek-zucchini-vibrators, cucumberophones and celery bongos, the orchestra creates its own extraordinary and vegetabile sound universe. The ensemble overcomes preserved and marinated sound conceptions or tirelessly re-stewed listening habits, putting its focus on expanding the variety of vegetable instruments, developing novel musical ideas and exploring fresh vegetable sound gardens.
Watch their process in an amazing video, here

…and our ears had never before, heard anything this beautiful.

Rocket’s Tail
by Kate Bush
That November night, looking up into the sky,
You said,

“Hey, wish that was me up there–
It’s the biggest rocket I could find,
And it’s holding the night in its arms
If only for a moment.
I can’t see the look in its eyes,
But I’m sure it must be laughing.”

But it seemed to me the saddest thing I’d ever seen,
And I thought you were crazy, wishing such a thing.

I saw only a stick on fire,
Alone on its journey
Home to the quickening ground,
With no one there to catch it.

I put on my pointed hat
And my black and silver suit,
And I check my gunpowder pack
And I strap the stick on my back.
And, dressed as a rocket on Waterloo Bridge–
Nobody seems to see me.
Then, with the fuse in my hand,
And now shooting into the night
And still as a rocket,
I land in the river.

Was it me said you were crazy?
I put on my cloudiest suit,
Size 5 lightning boots, too.

‘Cause I am a rocket
On fire.
Look at me go, with my tail on fire,
With my tail on fire,
On fire.
Hey, look at me go, look at me…

Sunshine Superman
Donovan

Sunshine came softly through my a-window today
Could’ve tripped out easy a-but I’ve a-changed my ways
It’ll take time, I know it but in a while
You’re gonna be mine, I know it, we’ll do it in style
‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mine

I’ll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find
Everybody’s hustlin’ just to have a little scene
When I say we’ll be cool I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, a-it never ends
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mine

Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I’ll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
‘Cause I made my mind up you’re going to be mine
I’ll tell you right now
Any trick in the book now, baby, all that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain’t got a-nothin’ on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yeah!
A you-you-you can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne
’bout all the rainbows a-you can a-have for your own
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mine
I’ll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you’ve made your mind up forever to be mine

I’ll pick up your hand
I’ll pick up your hand

This week was filled with many tests of friendship…

Friendship
by Cole Porter

If you’re ever in a jam, here I am
If you ever need a pal, I’m your gal
If you ever feel so happy you land in jail; I’m your bail
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgot
Ours will still be hot.

If you ever lose your way, came to May
If you ever make a flop, call for Pop
If you ever take a boat and get last at sea; Write to me
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgit
Ours will still be it.

If you ever catch on fire, send a wire
If you ever lose your teeth and you’re out to dine; Borrow mine
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have ceased to jell
Ours will still be swell.

If they ever black your eyes, put me wise
lf they ever cook your goose, turn me loose
If they ever put a bullet through your brr-ain; I’ll complain
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships go up in smoke
Ours will still be oke.

If you ever lose your mind, I’ll be kind
If you ever lose your shirt, l’Il be hurt
If you’re ever in a mill and get sawed in half; I won’t laugh
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships have been forgate
Ours will still be great.

If they ever hang you, pard, send a card
If they ever cut your throat, write a note
If they ever make a cannibaI stew of you; Invite me too
It’s friendship, friendship
Just a perfect blendship
When other friendships are up the crick
Ours will still be slick.
